Ravishing and desperate Lysette Kersaint flees an impending marriage to a man she hates to seek sanctuary with a man she fears. For rumors abound throughout New Orleans concerning her handsome, brooding protector, Maxilmilien Vallerand -- whispers of his cruelty, his rages, his dark, mysterious past. Forced by circumstance, Lysette consents to wed the dangerous rake, becoming the unwitting instrument of his sworn vengeance. But the flame-haired beauty's innocent heart will awaken within him a soul of passion and poetry... and spawn a love magnificent, wild, and true.WHEN STRANGERS MARRY is book one of two in the "Vallerands" duo and was originally titled "Only In Your Arms" when it was released in 1992. For whatever reason it underwent a makeover and in 2002 was given a new cover with a new name. Though it's been at least a decade since I first read this story, I did notice some differences between the two and think the original was slightly better. I still loved the book though, which held my attention from the first chapter all the way to the last. The characters were wonderfully well fleshed, and while Max was intimidating, he's also very vulnerable and his love for Lysette is clear to see and feel. Overall the entire story was fast paced, filled with drama, romance, and thoroughly entertaining. I'd highly recommend it and am planning to re-read "Only With Your Love" next, which is about Max's twin sons.
Lisa Kleypas is one of my favorite author's. When Strangers Marry came out I loved it. When I found out it was originally called Only In Your Arms I just had to order it. Wow...I'm so glad I did because everything that was in the original book and not the new one I LOVED!!! There was more LOVE and AFFECTION towards Lisette from Max in the original. He catered to her more and the most important part to me in the original book is how he told her how much he LOVES her!!! I love the new version but you can't touch the original!!! I highly recommend anybody who loved this book to read the ORIGINAL PLEASE. "Only In Your Arms" ...your gonna have to order it because its not in ebooks. If you love Max&Lisette's story your gonna love Justin's!!! "Only With Your Love"... HAPPY READING LK FANS!!!
The story was good but I didn't like the writers tendency in witholding the ages of her characters; it's disconcerting when a reader is trying to get in tune with the characters but can't.I did not like how the precarious 15 year old was written; I felt like his life wasn't difficult enough for him to be over acting, not coming home and consulting with prostitutes. I just felt uncomfortable with his character! !
This is a reprint of Lisa Kleypas's first novel. I was very excited to read it, because she is one of my favorite authors. But, as excited as I was, I wasn't expecting her usual novels, because, well this was her first attempt. I hate to say it, but usually an author's first publication isn't as good as their novels now. Anyway, I really did enjoy this book.I thought that Lysette was a strong heroine, and though she seemed to cater to Max's needs a lot, she was still an individual. Max allowed her to have her own opinions and thoughts, and wasn't as high handed as many husbands of that time could be. I also liked Max. He was so happy to be around his wife, and I really don't see that much in historical novels until nearly the end of the book. He took joy in being with her all the time, and he liked her for her individualism.Max's sons, Justin and Phillipe, his mother, and the mystery surrounding his first wife's death all added to this book. But, I have to say that I guessed who the killer was almost from the first. Ignoring that fact though, this book has good characters, wonderful romance scenes, and a setting that I have never seen Kleypas use in her current books. I was pretty pleased with this book all in all, and I think it would be worth a read for any romance fan.
I first came across this book a few years ago and I loved it. I've read a few more books by the author, but so far this is by far my favorite. I love historical romances, but this is one of the few I've read that takes place in the pre civil war south. I liked pretty much everything about it. For once Lysette, the heroine, isn't a whiny little girl that needs a man to save her, and Max actually values Lysette's mind and not just her body.
This book reminded me of Shirlee Busbee 's books. As she is one of my favorite writers, I really loved this book. Max had been through hell. He was accused of killing his first wife and then to have his enemies betrothed practically fall into his lap, he could do nothing but take advantage of the situation. Love had other ideas.
From the very first pages, this romance transports you into a long lost world of the wild and steamy time of Creoles, Americans, Mexicans, Spaniards, Slaves all coexisting in a time where the old was clashed by the new. Aaron Burr is trying to become "King" of the Louisiana Territory and he is roaming the countryside to get followers. It's a historical time that I was not familiar with and the author does a great job in laying out just enough history to keep it exciting and authentic. The heroine is perfect. Lysette is "not a classic beauty like her mother was", but she is brave, loyal, smart and good. The man who "saves" her from a dreadful arranged marriage to a drunken beast, does it for personal revenge, but he finds himself enchanted with his arranged wife and Lysette is able to tame the Max, a rich plantation owner. This book is also about redemption, how an old family which has been ripped apart by tragedies are able to stay together and help each other, by Lysette's warmhearted presence. It is a murder mystery. It is a sexy, wildly entertaining ride. This is the best one I've read yet by Kleypas.
