This collection of stories is huge! I mean both that there are many stories included here and it is very easy to jump around and read different ones out of order, and I mean the importance of them is also huge.I haven't read them all yet, I just got the book a few weeks ago, but so far I am truly appreciating being able to read the perspectives of people who are most affected by poverty in our country. It is nearly impossible for me to stand an NPR voice talking about poverty in the United States as it gets glossed over with academic jargon and an attempt at feeling. This book is the opposite of that- Tiny and the crew at POOR Magazine are writing from their own experiences, and have taken the time and put in the effort to gather stories from many people who are experiencing poverty and compiled it all here. It is a must-read because there are are basically no opportunities for people living in such marginalized communities to tell their stories, this book is a portal opening their voices up to us to learn from. And the messages I have been learning so far are profound. How individuality and white psychology as a discipline clash with more community-based cultures, acknowledging the hard work done by recyclers and pan-handlers, and the systematic way people are excluded from privileges every day... the list gets longer the more I read!
As a professor with UC Berkeley's Global Poverty and Practice Program, this is the book I have been waiting for, and that I want all of my students to read. I am so grateful for the effort that has gone into the writing and publishing of this essential book.In programs like the one in which I teach, we often talk about notions of "expertise" and about the need for those who experience issues most directly to be central parts of designing solutions. Too often, however, when it comes to poverty, the voices of poor people are only presented through the ventriloquism of academics, professional activists, and service providers. This book, by contrast, is an act of self-determination.This book contains deep theory regarding the origins of poverty and current homelessness crises, as well as case studies describing solutions being designed and implemented by poor people, in collaboration with those who have access to greater material means. The word "collaboration" is key here; the solutions being modeled involve horizontal approaches, not inconsequential "participation" or "input" on strategies being determined by those with more money and more power. In addition to theories and solutions, this book is also a work of art, full of creative writing, creative thinking, and descriptions of creative doing of all kinds. One of the subsections of the book actually focuses specifically on Art and Cultural Work, as this work is central to POOR Magazine. Other areas discussed include Media Production, Education, Healthcare and Social Work, Employment, Activism and Advocacy, Housing Provision, and Community Reparations as an alternative to Charity/Philanthropy.It is easy to despair at the enormity of the problems that exist. This book, however, in its description of the work being done by the authors, is hope in action.I have also had the privilege of experiencing the teachings of POOR Magazine live, as well as visiting Homefulness (the self-determined solution to houselessness they are creating), and can say without hyperbole that the work they are doing is not only cutting-edge, it is absolutely fundamental to the kinds of personal, interpersonal, cultural, institutional and societal changes we need to make if we truly care about poverty.I cannot overemphasize how much I urge everyone to read, learn from, and be moved to action by this book. If you live in or are visiting the Bay Area, I also recommend coming to meet the authors and check out the work they are doing on the ground. But I am so grateful that this book now exists so that those who are not able to come in person can still learn from the enormous wisdom, experience and expertise of these magnificent leaders.
Where to begin?! As an artist and organizer in the academy who has often found it difficult to be excited about the books and essays on various forms of scholarship, this was a breath of fresh air! I feel so lucky to have this in my library and list of books now to recommend friends and strangers alike to its no-BS brilliance. It makes absolute sense that we should be learning about poverty from people who have lived it, the poverty scholars themselves.Even reading the table of contents woke me up--there are so many incredible essay titles and powerful re-frames of things we take for granted. i.e. "How Did It Get That Way? The Herstory of Akkkademic Colonization" and “Deconstructing the Privilege of Writing.â€I can't wait to assign this book to my students for years to come!Thank you for this important work, which I can already feel is planting seeds for the consciousness to think/learn WITH not ABOUT so-called marginalized subjects. That we need to see our own role/implication in these systems of oppression, rather than continue to inadvertently strengthen them.
I had the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book, and I was blown away. I learned so much about the history and current context of poor people’s movements. In addition to the expansiveness of the people and groups included in the book, one thing that stands out is the heart-felt passion that the authors convey. These are first-hand accounts written by authors who are deeply involved in poverty spaces, rather than wealthy foundations and academics who don’t know what it’s like to be poor. Highly recommended for anyone searching to learn about how poverty and racism impact our world.
Excellent book on Poverty Scholarship by Poor Magazine mothers, fathers, elders, youth--all scholars, all who have survived the many lies that have been told about our struggles by academia, politicians, the media--the institutions that keep us in a grasp of separation and at odds with one another. POOR Magazine resists the cult of independence by practicing "Interdependence". Their work in media is real--Reporting and supporting communities in struggle and by providing a template for housing called, "Homefulness", a true solution to homelessness with a sweat equity housing model that is blossoming and thriving in Oakland. This book is a must read for educators and those who truly care about their communities, who seek to take back our lives through cooperation and with the collective knowledge that we have to share through our lived experiences. It is a must read.
