This book is interesting if you want to know some fun trivia, or to be profoundly grateful not to have been born in medieval times. My issue with it was that it seemed so repetitive from about the middle of the book to the end. I think if it was organized differently--by procedure, perhaps, instead of eras of medicine--it would have been better. It felt like the author was including the interesting bits of information he found as he found it instead of working to organize it in a readable way. I wish he'd instead gathered all of the information about a topic, such as bloodletting, and discussed it in detail instead of writing about it over and over again throughout the book with nothing new to add. It's strange, because the book feels both too long and too short. It's so repetitive on some information, but also doesn't go deep enough into any of the topics. I wanted to learn more, and instead it's kind of a pithy overview on interesting things. Overall, an okay read.
The information was interesting but it wasn't well written and referred to things without explaining some background about the subjects or referencing pictures that weren't included. Would have benefited from having fewer topics and go a bit more in depth about them and including pictures they were talking about
Found this book amusing (occasionally), absolutely horrifying (many times), and interesting (at all times). I knew of some of the things doctors did through the ages, like blood-letting, but did not realize that this practice killed our first president, George Washington! Or that it was still being done one hundred years later! And I had previously read that mercury was used to try to cure sexually transmitted diseases, but did not realize that it was used for other diseases and medical conditions as well, or the excessive amounts used. It's a wonder more people weren't killed by doctors. And, now I understand a bit more why people were so scared to go to hospitals for centuries, even through the early decades of the 20th century. As Doctor McCoy would say centuries in the future about our current medical practices, "barbaric."
I'm going to have to agree with other reviewers. Against my better judgement, I was curious so I bought it anyway. Turns out the book is a bit scatterbrained, shallow and disjointed. I'm disappointed this wasn't what I had hoped - as a science educator and neuroscientist.
This book has taught me a lot about the history of medical treatments from ancient times to modern times. The author knows how to keep the readers interest with a clear and flowing style. The book is both very informative and entertaining. He discusses the development of and eventual abandonment of so many treatments throughout history. Some of the treatments, to me are quite humorous, and show the many efforts of man to alleviate disease and sometimes swindle their fellow man. This is written from a historian's perspective and doesn't require a background in medicine to read and enjoy. For anyone interested in the history of medicine- I highly recommend this superb book.
A good review of the (sorry) state of medical practice until nearly the present time. We are mostly still here because of modern antibiotics and good sewage and water supply workers. Don't ever let your doctor do something to you without a good explanation and his experience - results- with the treatment
I read this book after seeing it referenced on another website.I generally liked the subject matter, learning about how modern medicine got where it is today can be quite interesting in a morbid sort of way. Unfortunately, while it covers a long range of history and a variety of medical ailments, this book barely scratches the surface- I kept wishing for more detail. It's written in a lighthearted way that's easy to read, but it almost felt like a rough draft, and at times, like it could've been written by a high schooler. It was almost like the author had such a wealth of information (no doubt this is the case) that in order to include it, he had to keep each topic extremely brief.A good read as an introduction to historical medicine, but if you want hearty information, this just won't satisfy.
Very well researched, easy to read. Glad that I don't live back in those days.
